  1. Just heard the Jim Hampton interview with Ken Draper of WCFL…boy, it was fun to relive those days. Thanks to John Rook for posting on my Facebook page.

    Dick Carr
    WNEW, WIP etc.

  2. Listened to Jim Hampton’s interview with Johnny Randall. Johnny says he was disappointed that by the time he got to WXYZ AM, they had changed to a more adult contemporary format. Johnny was great in that format. He held down the 10am-2pm slot for several years, following Dick Purtan.

  3. Just heard the pre Woodward Dream Cruise broadcast on WOMC. Fantastic! Keep up the good work…and thanks for including the Big8 for us on the other side of the river. Great stuff….. Thanks!

  4. Probably the most amazing thing about being a teenager and growing up in the ’50s and ’60s was the impact radio had on us – and we didn’t realize it at the time. Unfortunatly, you can’t say that for todays radio. I was a wannabe DJ caught up in the excitement, doing shows at Metropolitan Beach and for a time was on the air from Macomb Community College radio, WMJB. I even auditioned for booth anouncer at WJBK (just didn’t have the voice). Back then, the transistor radio was a teenagers best friend. Now, living in Pennsylvania, I can’t take part in the Woodward Dream Cruise (or the Gratiot Cruise for that matter), but I can feel the thrill knowing it still goes on. I’ve listened to your Radio Recall (being retired, I have a lot of time on my hands now), and appreciate your taking the time and trouble to put it together. I know how much work it was, so I know it was a labor of love. Thanks so very much!

  5. Thanks for the nice comments. I still love radio. Putting together special programs about radio in the past and how it affected our lives is a passion of mine.

    1. Hey Jim,

We’ve had prior contact but it’s been a long, long while and you likely don’t remember me. If you still do very faintly remember, it would be for the comment from me that, as a ‘record spinner’ at 1270, you had a job that I’d have given a body part to have.

Couple of things have been eating away at me and I thought I’d run them off you.

As a high school kid I had a hard cover copy of the Gates Radio Broadcast Equipment catalogue. I believe I somehow charmed it from Gates though I don’t remember under what pretext.

Center section were photos taken inside the 1270 studios at Broadcast House. And the focal point of one of these photos was a young Jim Hampton.

I’ll just bet you would have a mint condition copy of this same catalogue.

If you know what I’m talking about, Jim, would you be so kind as to consider scanning the WXYZ center section photos for me?

Next burning issue, which I hope I will not take to my grave, unresolved. Jim, I’m pretty familiar with most of the jingle series used by WXYZ thru the years. I have their PAMS. I’ve been fortunate to get a really pristine digital file of the Lee Alan custom Anita Kerr; got that from one Don Worsham, a very congenial and generous collector in California. I even have the ‘Zing’ series provided courtesy of Ken R.

What I’ve never been able to pin down are the Anita Kerr tracks used between approximately 1960 and ’62. These were identical-sounding charts to ones on the big WLS package:

      – Radar Weather Eye

      – It’s the Right Spot …It’s the Bright Spot

      – Turn Your Radio On, Turn Your Radio On, It Makes Your Day Move Along

And a few other tracks. Am I sure I remember hearing them? Absolutely. And I believe they were sung for the client, not somehow lifted and homogenized from WLS as a ‘sister station’ courtesy.

Do they sound familiar to you? Haven’t seen them on MCRFB nor anywhere else online. The Missing Anita Kerr WXYZ Tracks…

You’re indeed my last hope, Jim.

Thanks sincerely for bearing with me. Have a meaningful 4th full of wonderful memories!

  6. Jim:

Cudos to you and everyone involved in putting together this fantastic website for all of us to enjoy.

Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to re-unite with old friends.

    Sincerely,

“X” Danny Taylor(presently known as JP Morgan of KC radio since “72)

    1. Thank you, Danny Taylor for the kind words! Just read your comments this afternoon. Happy to know you discovered our website here. Want more on WXYZ? Check out what we thus far have archived on WXYZ on the website. Go to the left side of the main page. Open CATEGORIES. Scroll down to WXYZ and double-click on to open. And there it is! By the way, if you have any material on Danny Taylor while on WXYZ, and any material on WXYZ you may wish to share with us for the website, we would be DELIGHTED in having any new material WXYZ-related you may be able to provide, if all possible! BTW, great story you shared on Lee Alan’s mystery man, Detroit’s “Batman” around town promoting the series for ABC radio and TV in Detroit. I was born here in Detroit, and I grew up listening primarily to Detroit radio here during my youth throughout the 1960s. I loved listening to all of them — WJBK, CKLW, WKNR and WXYZ. I have over 40 GIGS of Detroit radio airchecks and Detroit radio material in my collection. So that’s says HOW MUCH I loved listening to many of the GREATEST Detroit radio voices, such as you Danny Taylor, throughout my Detroit teen years in the Motor City. I listened to all the GREATS WXYZ ever produced and — DANNY TAYLOR — with your great WIXIE radio voice, you fit the bill.

    1. Hi Floyd — some good news! — I was just contacted by Jim Hampton, who resides in Los Angeles, yesterday and there is a very good possibility we may have one of his two (or both 2014 0r 2015) Radio Recall Woodward Dream Cruise show(s) on the website, sometime soon. Thank you Floyd for visiting Motor City Radio Flashbacks (and tell your friends we are here).

  7. WOW This website is fantastic. I was born with a radio in my hand. This is a Detroit radio listener’s dream. I have a Zillion reel to reel tapes filled with 50’s and 60’s music and disc jockey’s. One of my favorite recordings was from WJBK. It was a news caster Norm Lenhart carrying on about Marc Avery. It was titled Lenhart’s Lament. He was sharing his feelings about Marc Avery who was moving to Texas.

  8. Jim – I love this web site.
Does anyone have any air checks of Marc Avery or Dave Shafer when they were in Arizona at KAIR circa spring 1960 to spring 1961?
